Just do the next right thing

just do the next right thing
There will always be something to do. Something that has to be done. It will never stop. And sometimes that’s overwhelming.

And when I feel that way I do 2 things.

  1. I sing “Just keep swimming.”
  2. I do the next right thing. (and only that one thing).

The overwhelming part is the sheer volume of things that need to be done. But just do the next thing, the next right thing, and then the next.

(Oh, and by the way, I didn’t come up with this… Not sure who did but you can start here and here to read other people’s thoughts on it. Apparently lots of addiction recovery programs are also a fan of this phrase…)

But what if you don’t know what the next right thing is?

Well…

Is there something you can finish?

Is there something that has been on your list for 6 months?

Is there something that’s due soon?

Is there something that has to get done if you’re going to accomplish anything else (like laundry or lunch)?

Is there something you’ve promised to do?

Is there something that’s time-sensitive?

Is there something that you want to do?

Is there something that’s fun to do?

Is there something that’s good for your health if you do it?

Is there something that you can do that will create momentum for the rest of your tasks?

Is there something you’re excited about?

Do that.
